Map Of The Month Club - October (and now November) 2013!

Post by AlumiuN »

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, after a far too long hiatus, it's back!

Grab all of the necessary files here

Latest patch

You'll have the remainder of September and the whole of October (and now November) to get your maps in. I think a maximum of 2 maps per person is probably enough, although if enough people take part I probably won't mind if you make 3 :)

Those of you who took part in the last MMC will be mostly familiar with the features and whatnot, but there's a guide included for those who are new to the competition. There are a couple of changes to how shading works which everyone should read up on, but otherwise, get your map on!

Finally, if anyone finds any bugs, post here or PM me and I'll take care of it. Also, if anyone wants to make some signature graphics for the winners of the competition, that would be greatly appreciated :)

EDIT: I screwed things up, the link now actually has a working copy of the files. Sorry about that xP

EDIT: My email address is in my sig, send your maps there once you're finished :)

EDIT AGAIN: OK, I'm going to wait until the end of November to hopefully get some more maps. Four isn't really enough, especially from only two mappers. :)

I've uploaded a patch that fixes a few small issues; you can grab it from the first post. :)

I've uploaded another patch that makes the settings for which enemies can open locked doors actually work :P

My pleasure, I've been itching to get back into mapping for a while, and it was good to program something for other people again :)

On that note, if there's anything people want to see in the next MMC, just say so and I'll see what I can do. I'm already considering putting in multiple pushwalls so that switchess can trigger more than single blocks, which I envision people will abuse in all manner of fantastic ways :D

I like that idea a lot! :D I personally would like to have some more teleporters, a north and a south one would be cool to have for the next round. Gives the mapper just a little more options.

Do we have any submissions for this yet?

How's everyone going with their entries?

There are three maps so far, although admittedly two of them are mine :P

18 days to go still! If anyone has any questions about the engine, let us know. It would be a shame if someone couldn't join in because, for instance, they found the mapping definitions hard to work with.

I've wanted to make a map, but just haven't had the time to sit down and work on one yet. :(

I'm having real trouble getting the switches to work, I Can't seem to find the actual wall switches where you flick the switch, can anyone help please?

Plus there seems to be some multiples of certain things, do the following do anything different;
Extra life & 1up
End level object & end game trigger

Also, Some suggestions for the next version;
Control over the inside/outside areas in realtion to rain/snow or will it always just rain/snow everywhere?
Any chance of doing a MotM version with the 3rd plane enabled and textured floors and ceilings?
How about having exploding barrels and breakable columns?
Directional sprites, like the glass etc.?
I really like the random enemy items, any chance of a random Boss item?

If you mean the actual wall tile, it's 88 (or 89). If you mean the object that controls it, those vary, but all sit between 364 and 391 (if you're using ChaosEdit, they're the different coloured S tiles, not sure about other editors).

The definition files I have only have one extra life/1up object, what are the numbers on the two objects? As for the end level\end game objects, the end level one just sends you to the next level, the end game one actually ends the game. Don't use the end game one :P

EDIT: OK, I found the other one, guess I didn't look hard enough xP They actually spawn the same object, so you can use either, although I'm liable to replace one of them with something else next MMC.

This could be hard to implement, as we'd need some way of defining indoor/outdoor areas. Perhaps some floor codes could denote outside areas?
Dean wrote: Any chance of doing a MotM version with the 3rd plane enabled and textured floors and ceilings?
This could be done, although I'd need some new art for that, and it would kind of shun the people who use Mapedit. Anyone else want to chip in on how they feel about this? (This would also make it easier to have outdoor areas)
Dean wrote: How about having exploding barrels and breakable columns?
I can definitely add those, if we can get art for them
Dean wrote: Directional sprites, like the glass etc.?
I can change those too, plus maybe the twin columns and some others?
Dean wrote: I really like the random enemy items, any chance of a random Boss item?
Heh, I like this idea, I'll definitely put it in (although I wouldn't recommend using more than one in the same level as the objects they drop are defined by which boss actually spawns) :)

In my "Base Of Operations" code, I did a little trick where the floor/ceiling textures are drawn only if square (0,0) has a value over Zero in the third map plane. The code is in WL_DRAW.CPP, and it's not too hard to implement. As long as you don't put any Objects in the Square (0,0) of the map in MapEdit, you should be fine. :)

And I'm also totally open to having the artwork in Base Of Operations used in anyone's projects. :)

I kind of fear this is going to scare some mappers away from the MMC, and it's not like we a large number of mappers now.

I posted my thoughts here:

Chris wrote:I think "Addons/Mods/TCs" is the right section for new levels, based on the sub-forum descriptions (?).
Since these MotM threads are stickies in "Wolfenstein" (implying that they are more important than wolf3d conversations in the wolf3d section), I am outraged and offended at DHWM (Die hard Modders) to a level where I just want to watch this forum burn to the ground.

Long live Wolf3d Haven forum!

That was my line of thinking too.

Well, I just posted this here because all of the other MMC threads are in here, I'm willing to move it somewhere else (or rather, have someone move it) if it's really that much of an issue. :)

Geez Chris, overreact much? You want the forum to burn because something is placed in the wrong section? Get a clue mate, what a ridiculous reaction...

Alright folks, one week left! We're up to four maps total (by two mappers, one of them being me :P), so unless there's a few maps people are waiting to turn in I'm thinking we might want to extend the deadline a bit. Thoughts?

I agree. Are people interested anyway in creating a map for this?

I for one am, just haven't had as much time as I used to enjoy when the original contest took place around six years ago. I can't submit something in the next few days, so an extra month would be greatly appreciated...

You might perhaps want to look into ways of promoting this thing a bit more, too. Don't know, maybe sending folks PMs/emails, etc... The forums seems to be in a kind of hiatus now in terms of traffic and that is surely hindering awareness on this... Just thinking aloud...

Take care,

Ariel

Hmm, sounds like another month might be a good idea then. So it shall be - I'll wait until the end of November to release it, hopefully that should be enough time :) I'll see about emailing some of the old participants and see if I can get them involved.

I'm also willing to contribute if this is pushed a further month. Maybe even 2 maps if that's necessary.

Go for it, although don't do 2 just because we need the numbers, do it because you want to :)

We'll see. With all those features I'll probably run dry after half a map... lol... So maybe 2's not the way to go. I will give this a shot though.
