KowTow: RELEASED!

Post by Thomas »

After three months in the making, I expect to release my most recent project, KowTow, sometime next week. It will feature 20 brand new levels, numerous new graphics and a small host of new sounds and music.

The coding for this project is courtesy of AlumiuN who did a great job. Some of the new features include:

* 20 new & gargantuan levels (Including one secret level)
* Ammo limit greatly raised (The player can now obtain 500 bullets!)
* New ceiling colors/floor colors
* 2 new enemies added
* Animated objects
* Extra static objects
* Extra wall textures
* Level names showing on Get Psyched! screen

DOWNLOAD HERE

Some screenshots...

Look out for this one sometime next week. Adolf Hitler will be the final boss, though several other bosses are scattered throughout the mod, some even more than once. Aesthetically the mod is a spoof on alcohol and color blocking atop a slice of the entertainment value we still get out of good ole' World War II.

Sounds fun. 20 Levels seems perfect for me. Never manage to finish episodes with more for some reason. :lol:

All right, everyone. I have sent off KowTow to James over at WolfSource, and have added a temporary download link in the first post. Feel free to download it and enjoy! :)

Quite funny, though I'm finding level 2 a challenge to get through. It's very easy to become disoriented

I've played a few maps in and I've got to say I love what I've played so far. Your mapping is always great at making me stumble into tense, crazy situations that I limp away from barely successful which is just tons of fun.
I'm just trying to entertain people.

First of all: congrats on the release, Thomas!

I got a question though. My machine (convertible) runs with Win 10. I can open the archive, it shows me a sort of split screen when I click on the .exe.

How do I run KowTow with a Win 10-system?

Did you install monitor software which supports split screen ? I think you played so many wolf games on same machine till now.

No, I didn't install split screen as a monitor mode.

And yes, I did - Win 7 (on my home machine) lets me play them. The machine I'm typing this on is my laptop (tablet) for university.

Try compatibility mode in windows 10. Right-click exe and play with the options. May be some settings allow you to play game as it is. I am on win10 x64 AMD PC. No problem.

On level 9. Like the big halls , sufficient ammo, easy secret walls and placement of enemies for surprise from long corners. Like the new music too. Some music sounded like old console games. Please continue your generosity at 500 ammo limit in upcoming mods Thomas. :D

Playing level 2.

I'm a big fan of Thomas mapping (as latest Eisenfaust Edition shows).
I can appreciate this mod for what it is - originality, self humor, and good mapping by itself.
I myself have planned and scrapped a "joke" mod on wolf3d - with self humor towards original Wolfenstein (can still share the art and animations made for it if Thomas needs more ideas. Really, Thomas, a mod with my "joke" ideas made back then can fit your mod style like a glove).

Just as subjective personal preference (again, only on level 2 so far)- I prefer immersion is Wolf3D mods. It's...less fun for me, again - personally - to play mods that "break the fourth wall" so to speak and keep "ejecting you out of experience".
I think funny walls can be a cameo, but after seeing tons of wall with same joke or message - it loses the purpose and the punch. It is fun the first time you read it (especially the secret hinting wall, that was funny), but not when every wall is decorated by it.
From that moment on it's just "breaking the 4th wall" on constant basis.

Love the blue bubbles idea, really make a different gameplay. Love your beer sponsor too, you can make money off it, heh :)
I also love that Thomas invented a new genre of Wolf3D mods, this is neat :)

Whoops, I left that in there while debugging. Here's an EXE that removes that.

Right.

I'm home now and after some hard time with my antivirus software (which first listed the .exe as harmless then removed it for some reason) I was able to begin playing the mod.

Thomas, you did an awesome job, and I really dig the inside jokes. I really do. And I like the music. :D One cannot listen enough to Black Sabbath or Jethro Tull. King Crimson is another favorite. So are ELO and Genesis. Of course.

"Another boring map set coming soon." So hilarious!

Keep up the good work!

:tup: :beer2:

Why did you name it "kowtow"?

And happy birthday to you!!!

Thanks guys for all your kind comments, glad you enjoyed the mod and the music as well. I liked the name, and with the loose theme on alcohol and the grip that it can have one a person made me think of the act of kowtowing, which is - as far as I understand it - bowing so far down you touch the ground.

It's a gesture of respect and humility. Rather, it was.

In times when China still had an emperor. I read about it in Pu Yi's - who was actually the last emperor - autobiography and some books about Chinse history.

Now that Thomas has given the green light, I have a few extras:

First, I remixed the IMF music with updated instrumentation and exported to Wolf4GW format, which prevents the songs from cutting off early. You can grab an updated build of the SDL version HERE.

Second, I have made a straight port of KowTow to ECWolf. The only outward difference between this and the original release is the addition of the IMF music remixes and the lack of level names on the Get Psyched screen (EC/LZWolf does not have this ability yet). DOWNLOAD HERE

Lastly, I have also applied the Demolition content to the KowTow port. This version has blocking static deaths to preserve gameplay and prevent sequence breaking, but otherwise contains the same features as the other Demolition editions. DOWNLOAD

Kowtow demolition has bugs. I found in 1st stage starting itself. When i shooted fire to the enemy , it was not killing him. Using lzwolf.
