How do you guys beat Level 18? In the hintbook, it says to run past the Death Knight to the back hallway on the left I think (where there's one less mutant) so you're not cornered in. I think that makes sense, as staying in the Elevator room area you'll be hounded by the enemies and lose ammo/health quickly. Always thought that level seemed unfair until I found out about that.

The Spear of Destiny hell levels may also be inferior because you retain your keys from the previous level. Which in a normal spear mapset, means at least one key. And even if floor 18 had no keys, you'll always receive the golden key if you start from scratch anyway.

This actually just gave me an interesting vanilla mod idea. Make the floor 18 with no keys (or just the silver key), and start the floor 21 with a room that contains a ghost, and the only exit locked with the gold key. This would force the player to die and restart from pistol start (as only then would they respawn with the gold key), offering more challenge despite the level being so late in the game. You could also add a 1up or some crowns by the end of floor 18 to ensure the player actually has an extra life to spare.

As a variation of this, instead of the golden door you could just add no exit whatsoever, but the respawn location (which is the player start) could be completely different from the place the spear throws you in.

Those are smart ideas :) but it assumes dying is a necessary thing, what annoys me a little bit conceptually.

Like the end of Doom Episode 1. I remember pressing IDDQD repeatedly and killing all the monsters. I wonder if you can IDSPISPOPD out of there afterwards and escape certain death.

IIRC the player gets the gold key when they travel to level 21 anyway.

I'd say just have the code rob you of the keys when the level starts, just like all the other levels do. Allowing the player to live when he's transported *then* forcing him to die afterwards doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Maybe he'd 'die' during the transition to the other dimension, at least forcing him to regather his weapons.

I mean, it's incredibly easy to change that in the code, but:

rather disqualifies that :P

I thought so too until I tried it (after watching Cyanosis's video). If you grab the Spear without having the key, it does not appear on the Hell level. You can't use an elevator to go from 18 or 20 to 21 either. So I guess you have to die to get it or warp there.
