Mission 3 The Ultimate Challenge Versions

Post by Adam Biser »

For anyone interested in the differences between the Activision and Super CD versions of Mission 3... or at least those that I could find.
Activision files are dated 1994-04-01 03:00, appears to have had SPEAR.EXE 1.0.
Super CD files are dated 1994-06-11 22:00, had SPEAR.EXE 1.4.

This seems rather interesting.

Is that planet Mars in the Activision 117 picture? Is that Planet Mercury in the Super CD 117 picture? It seems that both versions are linked to DOOM regardless of the UAC logos being shown. I guess Abigor from the SOD hintbook has been identified. The image 88 Super CD picture that resembles the Devil Incarnate could be Abigor since it would not make sense for the Devil Incarnate to travel to that area and appear on a live video screen while being somewhere else. It could be pre-recorded I guess. It could still be the Devil Incarnate. Abigor looks like this: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/43/Abigor.jpg/220px-Abigor.jpg. The hintbook description of the demon is accurate.

I never knew there was a difference. I had the Activision CD which had SoD including missions 2 and 3. I have always liked missions 2 and 3 to pull certain graphics from (I don't like using the complete graphics set however). The mapping can be quite lazy at times.

@Joshua: Your guess is as good as mine. Looks like the Devil Incarnate to me, but I didn't check that very closely.

@Barry: I didn't know (or at least remember) that there was a difference either. After finding this, I did remember reading a post on here about there being two versions, so I guess I had forgotten. Mission 2 appears to be the same for both.

I wonder what's the actual difference between the two AHHHGSNDs?

@Military: They took the original sound and mixed in another at the beginning and it overlaps the original sound some, too. Sounds a bit like something falling/dropping if I remember correctly. I guess to do something with the silence that's in the first part of the original sound.

The mutant replacement's death sound. It would be cool if the bat actually made some bat noises.

Didn't know about the sound difference, but I guess I never bothered to do a chunk by chunk comparison. I assume you identified the differences by hashing the chunks in the gamemaps and vswap?

Still a very interesting topic to me. From the previous thread on the topic I don't think anyone confirmed which version was on the original floppy release, but given the dates on the releases my theory is currently that the UAC version is a development version with place holder textures. As far as I know only the re-releases are of this version, which would suggest the older version is what they had on hand. (Side-note: Don't think the Spear exe version is relevant since the originals presumably did not touch the game binary.)

@Blzut3: I noticed that the CRC32 was different for those files while sorting and arranging the versions I have. I searched for different bytes between the two copies and calculated which chunk had the difference. Exporting everything and comparing the hashes per chunk would have been much easier, but I didn't think of it at the time.

I think the chronology is like you said, though when I first saw the textures, I had assumed that they swapped in some Doom images to make the game tie in to it (loosely). It does makes sense for the Super CD to come later since it compiles everything together.
