30 years of SOD

Post by Thomas »

Happy 30th birthday Spear of Destiny, you old bastard. I wonder if any of you guys played Spear of Destiny back then in 1992 or shortly after. I cannot fathom how short a time went by from the WL6 Wolfenstein 3D release to this, and if anybody felt SOD was better or worse than Wolf3D. Personally speaking I initially gave SOD a lukewarm reception but I have learned to appreciate its differences from Wolf3D over time, its urgent boss positions, the ammo box and some of the new textures.

Overall, I enjoyed the levels of SOD a bit better than WL6, and the Ammo Box never turned me off like it did so many other people. I actually got SOD first and WL6 second. SOD was a Xmas present, and I got WL6 at an Apogee mass-discount. They wanted all the 5.25-inch copies out of their shelves, so they stripped down the prices and sent the news to everyone. It was bigger news for buyers than it was to Apogee's history in general.

When was this, Tricob? SOD before WL6 wow. Don't know too many with that story.

Same story for me: First WL1, then SoD, looooots of mods in between, and then WL6. I am foggy as to when it happened exactly, but it has to have been either 1995 or 1996; the former, more likely.

Cheers,

Ariel

Personally I've always preferred the seamless level progression of SOD vs the episode format of WL6 (hence why every attempt I've made at a mod has been based on SOD, despite the available code tutorials on making WL6 seamless), but it's been long enough since I've played through either of them that I don't really have much in the way of comparisons. Also the ammo boxes are cool ;).

That would've been some time in the mid-1990s. I was living in Fayetteville of TN at the time.

Meanwhile, according to PC Gamer, SoD was released in 1997...

Just being a nitpicker here, but that bugged me.

The article is blocked in my region. Something about requiring a subscription.

Yes, both Wolf3D and SOD have the Nazi symbol, and that symbol was banned in Germany for quite a while. But that didn't stop a hacked version from showing up ... with Hitler taking the place of B.J.! Bizarre stuff.

I had Spear Of Destiny on a CD ROM as part of the full version of Wolfenstein 3D along with demo versions of Quake 2 and Hexen 2. I used to prefer the aesthetics of SOD because it had many additional
wall textures including the stone wall texture and I also preferred the music selection as well as the ceiling colours ( the green ceiling on level 1 was something different ). In more recent years I found
myself playing Wolfenstein 3D more than Spear Of Destiny.

The Spear Man looks like Cinder from a game called Killer Instinct for The Super Nintendo. Or he looks like the lava man from a movie about 20 years ago called The Magical Legend of The Leprechauns. It's like one of the movies that you watch for the special effects.

I'm working on something for the spear contest.

Well, recently wolf3d.net was down for maintenance. It's back. Now you guys can go back to vote on your favorite spear in the contest.
