Solved: SOD & mission packs not available for download!?

Post by stathmk »

Please don’t get mad at me for being the messenger of bad news. I noticed today that Spear of Destiny and the mission packs aren’t legally for sale for download anymore!?!? I thought that I bought Wolfenstein 3D, The Spear of Destiny with the mission packs, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein from both gog.com and steampowered.com years ago. I believe it was $14.99 or $15.00 from each one.

These first 5 links don’t even still mention The Spear of Destiny or the mission packs.
https://3drealms.com/catalog/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2270/Wolfenstein_3D/
https://store.steampowered.com/sub/770867/
https://bethesda.net/en/games/product/WO1CSTPCBG01 (Clicking the PC Game site button on this page only goes to Wolfenstein: The Young Blood)
https://www.gog.com/en/game/wolfenstein_3d

I did a search for PC, All Games, English US, and the Wolfenstein 3D and the Spear of Destiny manuals aren’t even mentioned: https://manuals.bethesda.net/en?languag ... latform=pc Then I did the same search for English US.
This mentions Spear of Destiny, but is unhelpful for technical support for asking if we can buy it: https://help.bethesda.net/#en/home/product/1206

We need to still have Spear of Destiny and the mission packs for sale from a web site with a good reputation because I don’t want anybody downloading a version with a virus or downloading a copyright infringement version. We need to use the .exe or possibly other files to make mods.

EDIT: These 2 links were all I had found: https://store.steampowered.com/app/9000 ... f_Destiny/ (I’m going to log in and click the button that it’s relevant to me.)

I think it has been withdrawn due to the fact that the Angel of Death uses balls which some players might find offensive.

And yet I see SoD and the expansion packs for sale on GOG and on Steam using the link you provided. Crazy world.

SoD and the mission packs are sold with Wolf3D on steam now, stath.
I regret nothing.

Both GOG and Steam pages have Wolf3D and SOD together in one install. Both say "'Spear of Destiny' Expansion Included" on their page.

However, the mission packs are gone now and I don't think they can be purchased anywhere.

EDIT:
If you have https://store.steampowered.com/app/9000 ... f_Destiny/
the mission packs are there.

EDIT 2:

Kinda curious as to when copyright expires on these things. With films and music it seems in many cases there is a 50-year limit. And surely already numerous video games exist that are completely freeware, abandonware or whatever. I wonder which category the mission packs fall into. Formgen and all that... Yet using id Software products as its base and in some cases identical files (SPEAR.EXE and so on)...

US: https://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-duration.html
Canada: https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/canadi ... -copyright
Canada doesn't have the "work for hire" concept in copyright, so expiration is death of the author plus 50 years (death plus 70 years starting this year)
I don't know which country it would fall under, but there's a long, long time still either way.

Only the copyright owner can declare something "freeware" (and withdraw something from being freeware as well).

Solved: SOD & mission packs not available for download!?

Post by stathmk »

I finally had time since yesterday to type.

Hold the phone… Hold the phone… Hold the phone…

I’m sorry for the misunderstanding. My explanation, but not my excuse, for my misunderstanding was that after glancing at the “game’s delisted” thread, then seeing that the Spear of Destiny screenshots are removed from https://www.gog.com/en/game/wolfenstein_3d , https://store.steampowered.com/app/2270/Wolfenstein_3D/ , and https://store.steampowered.com/sub/770867/ then I still thought that it’s not for sale for download anymore. After you guys politely pointed out that the Gog and the steampowered pages still have a paragraph that I didn’t notice that The Spear of Destiny is included with it, then I realized where I went wrong. Thank you for politely pointing it out instead of turning this thread into a shouting match.

Just to reiterate:

Spear of Destiny was combined with Wolfenstein 3D on Steam and GOG and is available.
At the same time, the two FormGen SOD missions packs were removed from both and are no longer available.

Thanks for this. I spoke too soon earlier (sorry, everybody). My original downloads from GOG and Steam included the mission packs. I just downloaded Wolfenstein to a new directory and it didn't include Spear of Destiny at all, never mind the Mission Packs. Strange. I don't use GOG Galaxy so I can't speak for that. Same for Steam as I can't remember the credentials I used to open my account years ago (a true sign of old age). I also checked https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Spear_of_Destiny and it too appears to be giving outdated information. The forum at GOG finds a few people complaining about this issue. Wonder what really happened?

Hmm, well, it looks like those who purchased Wolfenstein 3D on Steam got SOD when they were combined, but those who purchased on GOG did not because GOG created a new combined game entry and previous owners kept their original purchase game entry.

Regardless, the FormGen mission packs can no longer be purchased, to my knowledge.
Just a convoluted mess with no explanation given.

Side: Never knew "Joshua" bypassed the SOD questions. Always used "pelt".

There are actually several backdoor code words to bypass the copy protection screen. However, most of them don't fit on certain questions. IIRC, the "I Am What I Ammo" question is one.

2 nights ago, I had forgotten to mention that Humble Bundle still sells the Wolfenstein 3D download:
https://www.humblebundle.com/store/wolfenstein-3d
I just don’t know yet if it’s the version with the Apogee, Activision, or GT logo on the splash page when loading Wolfenstein 3D. There’s some sort of coding difference between the Apogee and Activision versions, I’ve heard. Humble Bundle makes no mention of if the Spear mission packs are included. I’m just going to have to join Humble Bundle another day and buy it if you want me to tell you if it has the Spear mission packs.

I can’t think of anyplace besides Steam, Gog, or Humble Bundle that might still legally sell Wolfenstein 3D or Spear downloads.

@stathmk: Since the Humble Bundle store doesn't list "DRM Free" as a platform, I think this is just a Steam key, which should be for the combined Wolf3D+SOD without FormGen missions 2 and 3.

This: https://www.gamersgate.com/product/wolf ... 8-7846631-
or this: https://www.gamersgate.com/product/wolfenstein-3d/ don’t mention The Spear of Destiny.
Includes Spear of Destiny: https://www.greenmangaming.com/games/wo ... 180a82b82c
Also includes Spear of Destiny: https://us.gamesplanet.com/game/wolfens ... f=dbolical
I still don’t remember gamersgate, greenmangaming, or gamesplanet. I noticed these 3 links that are news to me under the Purchase tab on the right hand side of the page for a new mod at https://www.moddb.com/games/wolfenstein ... s-idkfa-3d

Gamersgate mentions Steam as its DRM, so they are Steam keys only.
https://steamdb.info/search/?a=app&q=wolfenstein+3d
The only Steam app ID for Wolfenstein 3D is 2270, which is the combined version. So anything selling Steam Keys for "Wolfenstein 3D" will be this one whether the store page has been updated or not.
